Skinner sells rare Holtzapffel rose engine
Skinner, Inc. auctioned Holtzapffel's lathe #1636 for $238,000 on December 1st in its Marlborough gallery. The lathe, made in 1838, fetched what may be the highest price ever paid for such machinery to date. Two additional Holtzapffel ornamental lathes were also sold at the auction, as well as a variety of ornamental turning equipment, books, and turned work in ivory and wood. A one-of-a-kind set of ivory-handled tools with silver engraged ferrules, displayed in a large double-door mahogany cabinet, made and shown by Holtzapffel in 1851 at the London Exhibition of the Works of Industry of All Nations sold for $43,200.
